Call for Submissions
Application Requirements:
1. Completed Application Form (click here to download)
2. Example of past work - One script with name and play title on cover. A list of characters must also be included. No co-written submissions and no musicals. Only scripts written in English will be considered.
* If you are submitting a screenplay that you wish to adapt into a stage play, you must include a two page explanation as to why you wish to adapt the screenplay and how you envision the piece being transformed from filmic literature to theatrical literature. A very strong case must be made that articulates your artistic vision and process for this adaptation.
3. A theatrical resume or bio.
4. Typed answers to the following questions (no more than one page each):
a. How would this commission be of value to you? What project would you want to write/develop and why? (Please include a detailed synopsis of the play.)
b. What inspires you to write plays? What are the successes and challenges that you have faced and how do you hope to address those in the future?
c. Describe your relationship to your Middle Eastern heritage.
5. Names of and contact information for two references. The references can be a theater professional with whom you have collaborated with in the past (this is preferred), a teacher of any discipline, or a workplace supervisor.
Criteria for Selection:
- Playwrights of a Middle Eastern background (West/Southwest Asian and North African).
- Plays where the protagonist or central character is of a Middle Eastern background.
- Plays that engage Middle Eastern or Middle Eastern American background, identity, and/or themes.
- Playwrights who create ambitious, fresh, playful, engaging, energizing, provocative, powerful and theatrical works.
- Plays that reveal unique and vital perspectives.
- Playwrights with clear goals about their writing who are open to a developmental process.
